FORT PIERCE, FL – For the first time in several years, the Hilbert College baseball team swept an opponent in back to back games played on the same day with their double-header victories over Centenary College March 13. Hilbert grabbed a 5-4, eight-inning win to start the day, before they put together a five-run rally in the top of the seventh inning to capture the sweep 12-9.
In the 8:45 am game, senior Nick Sherman went the full eight innings for the Hawks, as he struck out 13 batters and give up only six hits. In the bottom of the eighth, senior Jim Pernick kept the hopes alive when he hit home the game-tying run. Senior Matt Militello ended the game when his bat connected and sent the game-winning run in to secure the 5-4 win.
Pernick earned his first win on the mound in the noon game with senior Chris Hoak getting credit for the save. Leading the way in the big rally were Militello, Pernick and Hoak. Militello earned two RBIs while going 8 for 10 at the plate. Pernick finished with three RBIs and was 4 for 7 and Hoak went 5 for 9. Junior Ryan Ilardi and sophomore John Babocsi each had two RBIs and were 2 for 6.
Hilbert (2-3) has a few days off before they play again. Up next is a double header rematch against Delaware Valley March 16. The Hawks finish their spring trip on March 17 against Richard Stockton College.
