BOX SCORE

HAMBURG, NY – The Hilbert College men’s basketball team got back on the winning track after an 89-32 drubbing of Franciscan University February 4. With the win, Hilbert (8-5, 11-9) remains in a two-way tie with Penn State Behrend for 3rd  place in the AMCC standings. Chris Hoak’s {in photo to right} 24 points led a trio of Hilbert players in double figure scoring, dropping the Barons to a 0-20 record.

After the first twenty minutes of play, the Hawks held a 45-21 advantage due in large part to solid defense, strong rebounding and hot shooting by Chris Hoak who went 3 of 3 from behind the arc and 2 of 2 from the foul line. Dan McFarland also was 6 of 10 from the floor (2 of 2 from long distance). Hilbert held a 20-10 rebounding advantage and forced 11 Baron turn-overs before the break.

The opening minutes of the second half became the Jordan VanDunk show as he scored the Hawks’ first 11 points which built a 33-point lead by 16:31. Over the course of the next six minutes, Hoak took over the scoring load, hitting three 3’s, making two foul shots, blocking one shot and grabbing a steal.

Hilbert shot 52.8% from for the floor and held Franciscan to just 21.4% field goal shooting. The Hawks doubled up on rebounds (42-22) as well as steals (13-7).

Dan McFarland (21 points, 4 steals) and VanDunk (17 points, game high 9 rebounds) joined Hoak with team high points. CJ Hodge distributed game high 5 assists and was credited with 1 block.

Nolan Albrecht led Franciscan with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

Up next for Hilbert is a very important cross-town rival game. They host D’Youville College February 8 (6 pm). In the first meeting, the Hawks came from behind to capture the 86-84 road win in early January.
