Season Results/Recap

2011 Season Review: Under the direction of first year Hilbert coach, the women’s cross country team showed signs of promise and a solid base for the future teams to come. Although a few of the harriers may have changed from race to race, Geoff Brunger designed workouts to prepare his runners for the 5K and 6K races they participated in weekly. With only one returning runner on the squad, Coach Brunger put together a group of athletes to compete weekly before they reached the AMCC Championship race held at Beaver Island State Park (Grand Island, NY). The 2011 season ended with the women’s cross country team finishing in ninth place October 29.
Freshman Maria Linares (Buffalo, NY/Lackawanna) was the team’s most dependable runner all season. The rookie led the Hawks each race and earned her first place finish at the Hilbert Invitational October 20. Her best 5K time (24:01) was at the Behrend Invitational. She chopped three minutes off her 6K time running a 28:35 at the AMCC championship race at the end of the season. She earned a 20th place finish in the 10-team race dominated primarily by Franciscan and Penn State Behrend.
Freshman Kiara Hilario (New York, NY/New Heights Academy Charter), junior Stephanie Smith (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) and senior Jillian Cohen (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) came on strong at the end of the season for the Hawks. Hilario dropped eleven minutes off her first 6K race on October 8th to the AMCC championship final meet. Smith struggled with a hip injury all season, but ran for the Hawks when she was able. Cohen raced with the squad late in October giving the team numbers when they needed them most.
Jackie Downey (Boston, NY/Immaculata Academy) began races in October and became the team’s consistent number two finisher.
Multiple times during the season, the other Hilbert women’s sports team’s athletes dressed and ran with the cross country team. The sixteen Hawks used this opportunity to improve their conditioning for their upcoming winter and spring seasons and their contribution was invaluable to the athletics program.
Coaches Brunger and Devlin are looking forward to advancing the women’s cross country team with their first recruiting class in 2012. Blending the returning runners with an incoming class of dedicated athletes, the Hawks look to build a successful program with expectations of finishing as one of the top teams in the AMCC.
