KEUKA PARK, NY – After ripping off their twelfth straight victory, Keuka College (12-1) captured the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) league championship with a 17-5 triumph over Hilbert College in men’s lacrosse April 4. Ryan Wagner and Brendan Kane netted twice for Hilbert (10-5) who completed their most successful season since moving to Division III status in 2011. James Voigt led the Storm with 7 points (5 goals) to go undefeated against all NEAC competition this year.
Keuka took a 2-0 lead after scoring back-to-back goals thirty-two seconds apart by 13:17. Wagner beat Eric Saltrelli at 11:18 putting the Hawks on the score board. Kane knotted the game less than three minutes later earning his twenty-seventh goal of the season. Both teams traded tallies by the end of the first quarter, with Wagner hitting his second of the day for the Hawks.
In the second quarter, Keuka put together a string of scores, hitting five in a row before Hilbert’s Kane broke the momentum with 4:20 remaining before half time.
Hilbert’s defense held the Storm to three third-quarter goals, but Keuka continued on their scoring spree by adding four more hits after the start of the fourth quarter. Aaron Romanowski was credited with the Hawks final score of the game with almost eight minutes remaining.
Saltrelli earned 13 saves for the host team while William Wagner stopped 12 shots between the pipes for Hilbert.
Keuka finished with 12 more shots than Hilbert (43-30) and grabbed seven more ground balls. Both teams were even in face-offs and turnovers as well as clears.
But the Hawks were called for twelve total minutes in penalties giving Keuka eleven extra-man opportunities. The Storm scored seven man-up goals, with five converted in the second half.
At the conclusion of the championship game, the NEAC All-Conference awards were distributed to the players in attendance. Hilbert’s Sean Purtill, Adam McCulle, Brendan Kane, Nick Kieffer, John Pingitore and Ryan Wagner received their All-Conference certificates and the Hawks earned the program’s first piece of hardware with the NEAC runner-up trophy.
