HAMBURG, NY – Poor shooting at the foul line contributed to Hilbert College’s 92-83 loss to Medaille College (12-6, 9-2) in a very quick paced and high scoring Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game on January 23. Every other stat-line was similar between the two cross-town rival teams, yet the 13 point swing at the charity stripe ultimately turned out to be the difference in a loud and proud Hafner Recreation Center contest.
Anthony Hodge led four Hilbert Hawks (14-5, 8-4) in double figure scoring and he earned game high honors with his 29 points. Medaille’s Jammal Coleman went 12 for 15 at the foul line and scored 27 points as he directed his Mavericks to victory.
Hilbert’s Trevor Stark produced good numbers hitting 9 of 11 free throws and three long balls en route to his 22 point performance. Jerame Owens did another double-double game with 10/10 and Dan McFarland chipped in 12 points.
Medaille’s Alex Baron netted 15 points, followed by Josh Laureano’s 14 and Tyler Stevens contributed 11.
Both teams came out of the gate on fire making more shots than they missed. Hilbert held the advantage in shooting percentage (55.6 vs. 54.2), one more rebound than Medaille, but the Hawks visited the foul line fewer times, being out shot by seven makes. Medaille also made two more 3-point shots to find themselves holding a 45-40 lead at intermission.
CJ Hodge opened the second twenty minutes with a long three-point shot, which was followed by two made free throws by Anthony Hodge to create the first tie of the second half. The momentum was in the Hawks corner and the crowd really raised the intensity of the game after Nick Nadeau drew two, back-to-back offensive charges against the Mavericks. Hilbert was able to build a 51-47 lead at 16:18 which they held for just over five minutes before Medaille knotted the game again at 11:57 (56-56).
Both teams traded baskets and leads over the next six minutes with one big play after another on every possession. Anthony Hodge stole a reversal pass back to the point and sped down the court for a contested layup to give the Hawks their last lead of the game. \
Coleman made both shots at the line to knot the game again for the 10th time and 17-seconds later Baron scored a layup for Medaille.
Nadeau drew his 3rd charge of the game raising the crowd again to their feet. Anthony Hodge penetrated to the hoop for a traditional three-point play but the Hawks watched Ryan Grandits come off the Medaille bench and start an 8-0 run before the Hawks began to foul at the end of the game. Medaille made 10 of 14 foul shots starting at 1:16.
Hilbert cooled to a respectable 42% shooting from the floor in the second half, but Medaille didn’t dip slightly below their first half shot shooting (52%). Medaille held a five rebound advantage on the glass, and both teams finished with 16 turn overs.
Hilbert returns to action January 26th when they travel to Penn State Altoona for a 3pm tip.
